As a teenager, Bahjat Alturjman read an article that mentioned Max Martin — the Swedish producer behind a large share of Western pop music's biggest hits — had visited a pop music academy in Piteå, in northern Sweden (EP 22).

The Email

Alturjman applied to the academy after the application deadline had closed. He wrote directly to the school, explained who he was, and asked to be considered. He was accepted.

The decision to email was not strategic in any formal sense. It was a teenager in Malta acting on a single sentence in an article, treating a physical location as a lead and a closed deadline as a suggestion.

The Meeting

During his time at the academy, Max Martin unexpectedly appeared at the school. Alturjman met him eye-to-eye. The producer he had travelled to a northern Swedish town to be in the orbit of was standing in front of him, in the building his cold email had bought entry to.

Why This Matters

The story is a minor case study in the mechanics of proximity. Alturjman did not meet Max Martin by being talented enough to be introduced. He met him by placing himself inside the only room in the world where Max Martin was known to occasionally appear, on the slimmest possible justification, and waiting.

It pairs naturally with his YouTube strategy at fifteen (manually adding 1,000 users a day with personal comments to build a subscriber base) and with the broader Damiri pattern of Libyans engineering their own luck when no institutional path exists. See: The Empty Fridge, Malta as Springboard.
