Osama Alfitory (EP 10) was embedded in Sirte for the final weeks of fighting in October 2011. His account of Gaddafi's capture and death is the most detailed first-person narrative in Season 1.

The Day

Alfitory was at a mass grave site for Gaddafi's forces when gunfire erupted and people started shouting "we've got Gaddafi." He ignored it at first — one of many false reports. Then a fighter ran past holding a gold-embossed pistol. He reached the field hospital: a chaotic, violent scene. Gaddafi was being beaten in what Alfitory described as a basement-like space.

When asked how he felt, his answer was flat: "I was used to corpses by then." The mode was documentation, not emotion. A man who had filled every screen, radio broadcast, and classroom for Alfitory's entire life was now dead in a concrete pipe. "I had never imagined this scenario even in a daydream."

Mansour Dhao

Alfitory later interviewed Mansour Dhao, one of Gaddafi's last close guards, captured from the same convoy. He described Dhao as one of the most honest people he ever interviewed. According to Dhao:

  • Gaddafi and his son Mutassim were estranged in the final days
  • Gaddafi was reading the Quran obsessively — no internet, no laptop charger, only a satellite phone used to call someone in Syria who relayed news from Arabic TV channels
  • When family members once asked Gaddafi to step down, his response was, word for word: "I stepped down in 1978" — referring to the Jamahiriya declaration

The Aftermath

Alfitory gained access to a refrigerated storage unit in Sirte's vegetable market where Gaddafi's body was held. He described the queue of people waiting, the market functioning around it, and the surreal quality of standing next to history in a greengrocer's cold room.
