London is where Damiri is made, where most Season 1 guests live, and where Libya is processed from a distance.

As Refuge

Nearly every Season 1 guest is based in London or the UK at the time of recording. For most, the move was shaped by the 2011 revolution and its aftermath, though few frame it as exile. London is where Nasr Elhadi (EP 2) and Tariq Elmeri reconnected years after their business collapsed. Where Emad Badi (EP 4) writes his analysis of Libya while his family remains in Tripoli.

As Catalyst

Several guests described London as the place where change became possible:

  • Emad Badi noted that Libyan friends only developed PTSD symptoms — claustrophobia, panic attacks — after arriving in London. Safety permitted what suppression had blocked.
  • Ghazi Gheblawi (EP 5) said five years in London made him reconsider patriarchy and masculinity — things he had never questioned in Libya.
  • Sirage Saudi (EP 3) moved to London for architecture and found his professional identity at Richard Rogers' studio.

As Home

Nasr Elhadi found community through shared life stage rather than nationality — his NCT group of new fathers in the same neighbourhood. Eslam Gazelle (EP 9) is the exception: she settled in Newcastle, not London, and corrected the assumption repeatedly.
