Malak Ben Hmeda narrowed twenty-five business ideas down to one using two filters, and the surviving idea was chewing gum (EP 24).

The Two Filters

The first filter was whether she could physically make the product herself, with her hands, without outsourcing the core work. The second was whether she was obsessed enough with the product to talk about it every day to everyone around her, without getting bored. Oh My Gum was the only idea that passed both.

The Packaging Insight

Walking through supermarket gum aisles, Ben Hmeda noticed that the category was visually dominated by dark greens and blues. Gum packaging looked like cleaning products: industrial, functional, unloved. She decided the opposite was the opportunity. The product should look like a beauty product. The packaging should resemble lipstick.

The Name

Her mother suggested "Mystic Gum." The name was shortened to OMG, then expanded into Oh My Gum — a pun that committed the brand to the position of premium, vegan, plastic-free, plant-based gum.

Malik vs Malak

For months, emails to potential manufacturers went unanswered. After Ben Hmeda bought a business email domain the replies started coming in — but several suppliers had read her first name as the masculine "Malik," and were audibly surprised to find a woman on the other end of the phone. She kept the accounts anyway.

"Finished and Highly Acceptable"

Ben Hmeda's operating principle for shipping the product was: "Don't strive for perfect, strive for finished and highly acceptable." It is the clearest summary of her approach to building — a refusal to let perfectionism block iteration.

Why This Matters

Oh My Gum is one of Damiri's clearest case studies of a diaspora Libyan founder building a consumer brand from scratch in London. The idea-filtering method (hands + obsession), the category-disruption instinct (treat gum as beauty, not cleaning), and the stubborn shipping principle are generalisable and have been cited by listeners as a practical operating manual.
