A targeted hit on a Libyan entrepreneur, two weeks before a Malta launch. Told by Mackey Abogrean (EP 27).
In July 2019, Mackey Abogrean was driving to Misrata in order to take a cheaper flight to Malta for the Sindibad accelerator at META Malta. The team had been selected as one of seven globally and the only entry from North Africa or the Middle East. Laptops, passports, hard drives, cash and a set of materials prepared for the launch were in the car.
A white Kia pulled in front of his vehicle and stopped. A polite man in a blue t-shirt stepped out. Three more cars closed in and boxed Mackey's car on all sides. Between nine and ten plainclothes men emerged, carrying 9mm handguns. One of them addressed Mackey by name: "Mahmoud." It was not a random stop. It was a targeted operation.
They took everything — laptops, passports, hard drives, cash, and the prepared Malta launch materials. At one point Mackey was struck from behind. They told him to turn the car around and said, in Arabic: "Don't make this bigger." The drive back was silent for ten minutes.
Mackey later traced the operation to a former insider with a personal grudge. He has chosen not to name the person publicly, and explained his reasoning in the episode: making the story about the perpetrator would make it about him. He did not want the headline of his life to be that he was a victim.
The ambush sits inside a wider pattern described across Damiri episodes: in post-2011 Libya, armed groups with no formal authority can reach, name and strip anyone they choose, without consequence. What makes this story different is the response. Mackey rebuilt the Malta launch from scratch, travelled, and continued Sindibad. The refusal to centre the attacker is itself the story.
