Episode: 34 — "How Do You Understand Your Emotions?" · Full Episode #34
Season: 4
Language: Libyan Arabic
Ali Bu Salah (علي بوصلاح) is a preventive psychology specialist and social media mental health creator from Benghazi, born in 1992. He originally studied engineering before switching to psychology. He is known for his question "What lies within me that holds me back?" — a framing he uses across his content and clinical work.
Bu Salah's closest friend disappeared from daily life without explanation. When he was eventually found, he had been diagnosed with severe depression. The experience shook Bu Salah enough to abandon his engineering studies and redirect entirely into psychology. The switch took nine months.
Bu Salah described university psychology education as inadequate — disconnected from the realities he had witnessed in his friend's case and in Libyan society more broadly. He did not leave the field. He pushed against the institution from within.
Bu Salah was involved in an incident at university in which a professor orchestrated an investigation against him. The details suggest a conflict over methodology or authority. Bu Salah left. He did not describe the departure as a defeat. He described it as a recognition that the institution was not the place where the work would happen.
This question became Bu Salah's signature — the entry point for his therapeutic and public-facing work. It redirects attention from external obstacles to internal patterns. He treats it not as a rhetorical device but as a diagnostic tool.
