The question that became a practice. Told by Ali Bu Salah (EP 34).

The Question

"What lies within me that holds me back?" — this is Ali Bu Salah's signature formulation, used across his therapeutic work and his social media content. It redirects attention from external circumstances to internal patterns. The question does not deny that external obstacles exist. It asks what, inside the person, collaborates with those obstacles.

Origin

The question emerged from Bu Salah's experience watching his closest friend fall into severe depression, and from his subsequent frustration with university psychology, which he found disconnected from the realities he had observed. The academic frameworks he encountered described conditions. His question was designed to interrupt them.

How He Uses It

Bu Salah uses the question as a diagnostic entry point — the first thing he asks, before frameworks or labels. It functions as a mirror: the person answering is forced to look inward before looking outward. In his social media content, the question serves the same purpose at scale, reaching audiences in Libya and across the Arabic-speaking world where access to formal mental health care is limited.

Why It Matters

In the context of the podcast, the question connects to a recurring theme: the gap between what Libya's institutions can provide and what its population needs. Bu Salah's response to that gap was not to wait for the institutions to improve. It was to build a portable tool — a single question — that could travel through a phone screen and do some of the work that a therapist's office could not yet do in most Libyan cities.
