Marbella is a small coastal city in southern Spain where Sirage Saudi (EP 3) was born and raised. It appears in Damiri as the setting for a specific kind of third culture experience — Libyan identity filtered through an international, Mediterranean context.
Sirage grew up in Marbella as the child of a Libyan family. He attended an international school rather than a local Spanish school, which compounded his sense of cultural limbo — he was not anchored to Spanish identity, Arab identity, or any single national framework. He described himself as "too Spanish to be Arabic, and then being too Arabic to be Spanish."
The international school meant his peer group was transient and multinational. Marbella's character as a resort and expat town reinforced this: the city attracted people passing through rather than putting down roots. For a Libyan kid already caught between cultures, the setting amplified the in-between.
Sirage's parents brought him to Libya at least once a year. He credited this as the act that prevented a complete cultural disconnect. Without it, he said, he would have lost the language, the humour, the social codes that marked him as Libyan. When visiting Libya, locals could hear the difference in his accent immediately. He missed colloquial words, slang, TV references. Marbella had given him everything except the context to be fully Libyan.
Marbella sits on the same sea as Tripoli and Benghazi. Sirage noted that Spanish and Libyan family structures share more than they differ — the emphasis on extended family, communal meals, street-level social life. The Mediterranean connection was real, even if the political and cultural frameworks were different.
